C128CR

Bil, I was wondering if you could shed a little light on a C128 I own.
Its a C128CR (flat) but there is very little information availble as to whether this was put into production or if just a few were made.  Certainly the case looks like a reused C128 case with additional spaces glued into the correct places for the smaller board.  I started a thread over on the c128.org site http://www.commodore128.org/index.php?topic=2657.0 and attached a scan of the main board http://www.commodore128.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=2657.0;attac...
Since posting (nearly 3 years ago) its now fully functional and is just waiting for a space to be cleared on my desk so I can use it.

I am posting this question to

I am posting this question to Fred Bowen who was still around, this may be the version that had 64k for the VDC is my thought.

C128 DCR

My understanding is that has a cheaper (and incompatible) 1571, with the controller circuitry integrated onto the main board - 64K RAM instead of 16K hooked up to the 80 column video controller - no fan, and a metal case.

The size of the regular C128

The size of the regular C128 and it's PCB came in part from the size od the C128D which was supposed to be released the same time.  It would have been easier to have done just the regular 128 but we believed in the Dand thought of it as the "real" machine to some extent.

I am the proud new owner of

I am the proud new owner of C128CR Engineering sample #10 motherboard that was recently sold on eBay. My board is missing a lot of chips, and at this point I'm not sure if I'm going to try restoring it or not. I probably could as I have enough defective machines I can get parts from.
I'm interested in finding out more as well.

I only saw my first 128CR at

I only saw my first 128CR at this years VCF, they were reworked a cople of years fater the initial release evidently.  From looking at the schematics, probably off of Zimmers, I remember it should be mostly the same parts except for near the 80 column chip.

I don't see schematics

I don't see schematics specific to the C128CR motherboard on zimmers. I understand the main difference on this board is using higher capacity ram chips, use of the newer VDC and (perhaps) 64K VDC ram. I say perhaps, because mine only has 16, but Engineering sample #2 (Ray Carlson's board) has 64K. The original poster's board looks to be from a production run, so I'm guessing that some C128's shipped with the CR board, sometime in 1988.
